    English Speech Contest

I’m grateful to be here with so many friends in OOCL. Especially I’d like to say thanks to the organizers for making the competition possible. And this is the largest audience I have ever addressed since I joined OOCL.

We are here today to talk about the hit topic in the world: The link between crisis and opportunity.
Now I’d like to tell you 2 stories to express my point of view.

The first story is about Tom and Jerry. There was a starry starry night. Jerry went home through the grave yard. Suddenly, he fell into a big pit. "Oh, god!" He shouted and tried to get out of it. But the pit was too deep, he failed. Then he thought:" OK, I just stay here. Tomorrow some one will cross here to help me."

At that time, a large ball dropped into the pit. “Oh, it’s Tom!” Jerry was so scared that he jumped and climbed. In a few seconds he managed to get out of the pit. Look, that’s Tom who stimulated Jerry to take himself far away from danger.

How could Jerry escape from Tom’s hunting every time? He believes that crisis can be changed to opportunity. Jerry is always in an extremely difficult situation set by Tom; however, he gets the success in the end.

This imaginative story is talking about a wisdom Jerry with some luck that turns crisis into opportunity. The other story is a true story. It is about Bill Gates and IBM.

After kicked out by Harvard University, Bill Gates visited IBM and tried to find a partner. The guy said ladies and gentlemen, I designed some good software and let’s cooperate. Say, if you use my software, the world will remember your computer. See you….
Do you know what’s happening afterward? IBM said who's that boy? Why not he looks at himself in the mirror?
Years later, IBM sought corporation from Microsoft, but got nothing only a word from Mr. Gates: Who can sell computers without my software in the world?
One senior manager of IBM wrote in his memoirist: Once there was a golden chicken in front of me, but I missed it.

It’s not only missing a golden opportunity I think, but preventing IBM from great development. Luckily it didn’t bring a storm to the company, but we can easily see missing one critical opportunity sometimes results in losing the game. A good situation will immediately turn to be a crisis if we don’t grasp the chance.

We can see from these two stories there’re several links between crisis and opportunity. Crisis can be changed to opportunity with positive attitude, self-confidence, brightness, and etc. On the other hand, missing an opportunity probably means facing the crisis. So for us, be brave when facing the crisis, and don’t miss any good opportunity. Do you think so? Thank you.
